Welcome to Sanglier

Glenn and Melissa Alexander came to Sonoma County to pursue a dream of building a life drawing on the traditions of France and the bounty of California. The Wild Boar, prevalent in the vineyards and on the dinner tables of French and Sonoma County grape growers symbolizes the Alexander’s commitment to honor the traditions of France in the wines of Sanglier.

In 2001 they purchased an old farm house and eight acres of forty year old zinfandel vineyards in the historic east end of the Russian River Valley. Each had their own separate goals linked by a common factor…..Sonoma County.

Wine, Food, and Cooking: Melissa has pursued the art of the kitchen since her childhood in Texas. For years she had read, collected, and explored the writings of MFK Fisher, Richard Olney and others while developing her skills and knowledge of the culinary world. Cooking schools in Provence, Italy, and work at the Culinary Institute of America became her vacation choices. The move to the Russian River Valley gave her access to numerous local famer’s markets, cheese makers, orchards, beef, lamb, and duck producers as well as locally caught seafood. Meals at the Alexander house are always special.

Wine, Food, and Farming: Glenn grew up in rural East Texas raising livestock and farming with his father. Anxious to leave that life behind, he spent years building a successful manufacturing company before longing for a more balanced and rewarding life. His love of wine inspired him to return to the life of a farmer, a grower of wine grapes. After purchasing the vineyard, Glenn worked at Chateau Montelena while completing the viticulture program at Santa Rosa College. After graduation, he did a harvest intern with Preston Vineyards and spent a year working with a vineyard manager before starting his own vineyard management firm. Today, that company, Bacchus Vineyard Management farms and manages over 400 acres of premium vineyards for wineries such as Kosta Browne, Copain, Paul Hobbs, and others.

Now the entire family is actively engaged in producing wines from family farmed vineyards. From Pinot Noir in the Russian River Valley to Grenache on the flanks of Spring Mountain, the Alexander Family is making wine that reflects a sense of place, tradition, and joy.

In 2006 Glenn and Melissa decided to make a small amount of wine from one of the very special vineyards they farm, the Kemp Vineyard. Decomposed sandstone soils, fog shrouded, cool mornings and bright, warm afternoons produced grapes of exceptional flavor and structure. The success of the wine was enough for the Alexander’s to bring in their children, Dustin and Chelsea as owners and to expand their wine making.
